A story about milk (thanks, Kel!)

A little old lady from Wisconsin had worked in and around her family dairy farms since she was old enough to walk, with hours of hard work and little compensation.

When canned Carnation Milk became available in grocery stores in approximately the 1940s, she read an advertisement offering $5,000 for the best slogan. The producers wanted a rhyme beginning with "Carnation Milk is best of all."

She thought to herself, I know all about milk and dairy farms. I can do this! She sent in her entry, and several weeks later, a black limo pulled up in front of her house. A man got out and said, "Carnation LOVED your entry so much, we are here to award you $2,000 even though we will not be able to use it!"

And here it is...

You know how you buy something sleek and see-through to impress your man...

...and when he leaves you, you just can't bear to look at it anymore, so you put it away until the day your heart has healed enough to open the closet door?

And there it is, waiting for you to reclaim it, that little see-through number you bought for that special someone?

Well, here is mine. We are ready for action once again!

And who was Julia (of Julia's coffee)?

Julia’s Coffee Shop is named after one of Charlotte’s pioneering public servants, Julia Maulden. As the first volunteer executive director, she helped get Habitat for Humanity started in Charlotte. She not only worked on the first Charlotte Habitat home, she also brought Jimmy Carter to the Optimist Park Neighborhood for a fourteen house Build-a-Thon. Julia grew up poor in the segregated South, borrowing and working her way through Greensboro Women’s College during the Depression...
